Accessing Transport Services for Aged Care & Disability

National Disability Insurance Scheme

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a program of the Australian government that funds transportation services for persons with disability.

The funding takes into consideration any applicable taxi subsidy program, however, it does not include transportation support for caregivers transporting a disabled family member to routine activities.

As outlined below, there are three levels of support for transport assistance. The three levels are made to give participants a transport budget who meet the eligibility criteria. Supports funded by the NDIA are indexed annually.

Level 1 – The NDIS will offer up to $1,606 per year to individuals who are not employed, enrolled in school, or attending day programs, but who wish to improve their community access.

Level 2 – The NDIS will offer up to $2,472 per year for persons working or studying part-time (up to 15 hours per week), participating in day programs, and engaging in other social events, recreational, or leisure activities.

Level 3 – The NDIS will offer up to $3,456 per year to participants who are working, seeking a job, or studying at least 15 hours per week and who are unable to utilise community transport due to their disability.

Exceptions: participants may get more funding if their work participation plan includes either general or paid support.

Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme

This is a government-funded program that provides financial assistance to eligible patients who need to travel to receive specialist medical treatment that is not available in their local area.

The PTSS gives transport vouchers that covers the cost of airfares, accommodation, public transport, and meals for patients and one accompanying adult. It also provides a small allowance for incidental expenses.

Private Funding

Every day, thousands of people in aged care and disability rely on transport services to get them where they need to go. Whether it’s a trip to the doctor or a visit to the grocery store, these services provide an essential lifeline for many people to travel independently as possible.

Unfortunately, funding for transport services is often inadequate, leaving many people without the resources they need.

Private funding can be a vital source of support for these transport services. By providing additional resources, private funding can help to ensure that everyone has access to the public transport they need. In addition, private funding can also help to subsidise costs for those who are unable to pay.
